There is a saying that goes “when everything is said and done, there is more said than done.” Nowhere is this statement truer than it is when discussing the subject of procurement, risk management, and compliance.
All of us now recognize the fact that this is an issue that needs to be handled. Unfortunately, few companies have implemented the necessary initiatives to address risk within the organizational structure adequately. The real question is why; why for example do less than 20% of all corporations perform any type of due diligence on their suppliers?
While recent papers from leading analysts attempt to address the disconnect between the recognition of risk and the adoption of viable strategies, the real obstacle to identifying and proactively managing risk has little to do with technology, and more to do with organizational will. Specifically, asking (and answering) the question: who owns the “risk and compliance mandate.”
