“Most of the other beautiful things in life come by twos or threes, by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts and cousins, comrades and friends – but only one mother in the whole world.” – Kate Douglas Wiggin

Yesterday was celebrated as Mother’s day in most part of the world. The word ‘Mom’ inflicts certain sentiments in every individual, as I wished my mother, while she was busy with her chores, I couldn’t help but notice that there is so much that she does for us and it sort of goes unnoticed. Coming from the procurement field I have a knack of relating almost everything to the subject. Now, how am I arriving at this topic, when the preliminary  purpose of writing this piece was to wish every one Mother’s day.

Keep reading and you will find out.

Being a mom is not easy. They are most strategic when it comes to keeping the family expenses in check, giving you visibility into your family budgets and spending. They are no less than those super women whose superpower is to bind the entire family together.  They are the ones you look up to and trust for making important decisions and for being your helping hand because they have the experience.

If you compare your organization to your family, which department would you think represents the mother of your organization best? Which is the department often taken for granted and almost always underappreciated? Which team binds various departments in your organization together?  Yes, you guessed it right. We’re talking about the procurement department also popularly known as the cost center of the organization. So how could procurement possibly be like a mother to your organization?

Mothers bind the family together just like the procurement department which integrates the various functions of the organization like finance, marketing ,sales, legal, production, etc. which makes the organization one single unit and increases the work flow efficiency within the organization.

Mothers manage everything related to their homes so effortlessly that they can rightly be called as the best managers that their organization i.e. their home could have. Taking the example of procurement management, mothers too manage the purchases in a way that there is sufficient stock of the goods that are needed for their homes from time to time. Similarly, they plan for all the requirements well in advance and ensure that all the purchases are made at the minimum possible cost. Thus they perform the task of planning, aligning, procuring and managing everything that her child may require just like procurement does for your organization.

This Mother’s day, let us take a moment to appreciate the value that mothers bring to our homes and thank them for being the unsung hero of our lives and likewise comprehend that procurement is not just a cost center for the organization but a function that adds value to the company’s business.

Last but not the least, wishing all the lovely mothers out there a very happy mother’s day!
